Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults of all ages. If you want to keep your teeth for a lifetime, it’s important to get treatment for gum disease as soon as you notice the issue. If you have swollen or discolored gums that bleed easily when brushing, you may have gum disease.
At Strahler Dental Partners, we offer a full range of treatments for patients in all stages of gum disease, from deep cleanings to gum surgery. Whether you have gingivitis, periodontitis, or advanced periodontitis, Dr. Cody Strahler will develop a treatment plan that will get your gum disease under control and protect your teeth.
Every patient is different, so we offer a wide variety of periodontal services at your local Schertz dentist. Dr. Strahler and our team will work with you to come up with a plan that’s perfect for your situation, your budget, and your schedule.
Deep cleaning is the first line of defense when treating gum disease. It’s also called “scaling and root planing.” In this procedure, Dr. Strahler will clean deeply between your gums and teeth using special tools. He will also smooth out the roots of your teeth to eliminate periodontal “pockets” where bacteria collect. Often, only half of your mouth is treated at each appointment, so it may take 2 appointments over several weeks to get treatment.
Gum grafting uses external tissue to rebuild and reshape your gums after they’ve receded due to gum disease. At Strahler Dental Partners, we use minimally-invasive techniques to speed up healing and recovery times, and to provide the best possible results.
Gum flap surgery may be needed for more advanced cases of gum disease. In this procedure, Dr. Strahler will cut and fold back your gums. This gives him access to the periodontal “pockets” below your teeth. Then, he will clean and remove diseased tissue. Once that’s done, he will suture the area and allow it to heal. You may also need additional treatments like gum grafting or bone grafting.
If you’re self-conscious about a “gummy smile,” Dr. Strahler can help. Treatments such as gingivectomies can remove excess gum tissue, exposing more of your teeth and providing you with a more balanced appearance.
Frenectomies are often needed for children with tongue or lip ties, which can interfere with proper feeding and development. In this treatment, Dr. Strahler uses a laser to snip the band of tissue causing the tongue or lip tie, restoring your child’s oral range of motion.
LANAP is an alternative to traditional surgical treatments like gum flap surgery. Dr. Strahler will remove infected tissue and bacteria using a special laser tool. This tool also helps speed up the healing of your gum tissue. LANAP has minimal downtime and is virtually painless, making it a great alternative to traditional periodontal treatments.
Yes. However, you can only reverse gum disease at the first stage (gingivitis). At this stage, no permanent damage has been done to your teeth and gums. In the later stages of gum disease, you cannot completely reverse and eliminate gum disease. However, you can control it, protect your gums and teeth, and halt its progression. The sooner you get treatment, the more likely it is that your gum disease can be completely reversed and eliminated.
