Are You Brushing Too Hard? Here’s How to Tell
If you’re experiencing gum recession, tooth sensitivity, or see visible wear at your gumline, your brushing technique may be a contributing factor. Other signs include:
- Frayed toothbrush bristles – If your toothbrush looks worn out in less than three months, you’re likely pressing too hard.
- Receding or thinning gums – Your teeth may look longer than they used to, or you might notice more of the root showing.
- Sore or bleeding gums – Healthy gums shouldn’t hurt or bleed with regular brushing.
A Patient’s Experience: Learning to Brush the Right Way
One of our patients from Schertz, a woman in her 40s, came to us concerned about increasing sensitivity in her lower front teeth. She had always been diligent about her oral hygiene, but after discussing her routine, we discovered she was brushing with a firm-bristled toothbrush and pressing hard in an effort to keep her teeth extra clean. Over time, this had led to noticeable gum recession, exposing the roots of her teeth and causing discomfort.
We guided her on using a soft-bristled brush with gentle, circular motions and recommended switching to an electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor. Within a few months, she noticed a significant reduction in sensitivity, and her gums stopped receding. Catching the issue early prevented the need for more advanced treatment like gum grafting.
